The Infinite, Patience Agbabi’s debut children’s novel, was recently included as one of Frank Cottrell-Boyce’s favourite recent releases and recommendations on Instagram for National Children’s Book Week. The award-winning author of Millions included a clip of Agbabi introducing and reading the first chapter of her novel.
The protagonist is Elle and she is a Leapling. Leaplings are children born on the 29th of February and thus only celebrate a birthday every four years. However, the Leaplings of Agbabi’s novel are sometimes blessed with the gift of travelling in time. Unfortunately for Elle, she’s not yet allowed to travel in time by herself… but she does.
The novel features a strong environmental theme in addition to the time-travel and has been described by Philip Pullman as “vivid, funny, exciting and inventive” and by Bernadine Evaristo as having “a magic all of its own”.
The Infinite, which was published on April 2nd this year, is the first in the Leap Cycle series published by Canongate.
